I Tried a $20 Truly Wireless Earbuds
When we think of buying truly wireless earphones, we expect to invest at least 100–200 Dollars but last year I came across a pair of earbuds for just $20. The earbuds come from a reputed Chinese tech giant Xiaomi and were only available in China. So, I ordered one from AliExpress and received them within 15 days in India. I’ve been using them since last year. Here is my full review of Xiaomi Airdots.
The product is available in both black and white variants. I ordered the black one. Earbuds come inside a small plastic charging case with Matt finish. The build quality of the case is average but helps in keeping the weight low. The case has a charging light on one side and micro-USB port on other. Overall, the design of the case is quite functional.
The earbuds are also made of plastic which makes them light and comfortable. They come with three pairs of changeable silicone ear tips for a snug fit. Each earbud has a physical button for controls, single press to play/pause music and double press to activate the smart assistant in the smartphone. We can say the design works for the product.
The earbuds use Bluetooth as the medium of communication with the smartphone. They use old master-slave type connection where left earbud pairs with the right one while our phone pairs with the right earbud. To pair, we have to take out earbuds from the case and wait until white light blinks, then go to the Bluetooth settings where we will see our right earbud to connect. Every time we remove the buds from the case, they will automatically connect with the paired device. The connection is generally good, but sometimes we might face the issue with the connection, just put the buds in the case and remove them again to resolve the issue.
Both the earbuds and the charging case come with the golden contact pads for charging the earbuds from the built-in battery inside the case. In my usage, Earbuds lasted for 2.5–3 hours of music playback on medium volume. The charging case can charge the earbuds 3–4 times on a single charge. Overall, battery life is average.
When we look for buying a cheap audio device, one of the biggest concern is about the sound quality. Redmi Airdots doesn’t disappoint when it comes to sound quality. The audio quality is decent, and vocals are clear while the base could be improved. Volume levels are also adequate for regular use. The design also helps in the overall experience by providing good sound isolation.
The earbuds also have a microphone for phone calls, but the quality is below average, and the person on the other end might hear low volumes.
I think Xiaomi Airdots are great value for money pair of truly wireless earbuds for just $20. They have all the necessary features we would expect from any wireless earbuds. The sound quality is also good for the price alongside their design, although battery life needs some improvement.
